My point is that I'm not dumping Sollux for you. Especially not because you'll be 'as good to me as he is'.

"...But I don't understand why not."

She growled and rubbed her forehead. "Okay, let me put this in terms you would understand. Say you had a really nice..." She looked him up and down. "...Pair of shades, that you loved. And they were maybe a little broken, but you liked them a whole lot and wore them every day."

Sunglasses, he understood. Even if he didn't yet see the connection.

"Go on."

"Okay, then say someone came along and offered you a pair of shades. And maybe they're a different brand, and you've never tried them before. They could be sort of uncomfortable, you don't know. And they're not even new. They've got a few cracks, too, but in different places, and the person says 'try my shades! They're just as good as the ones you have'. Would you get rid of your old shades and take the new ones?"

Equius considered this for a moment. "...That would be exceedingly unlikely. However, it isn't a bad thing to have a spare set of shades."

"But you can't have a spare matesprit," Aradia said quietly.

"So the analogy falls apart. ...You could choose the shades you think are better and use the other one if the first pair breaks, or if you just discover that it isn't as good." Equius was reaching here.

"Mmm," Aradia said. "Exactly. So I choose Sollux."

"...I will never understand why." Sollux wasn't particularly bad for a lowblood, but. Lowblood. That word covered all of it.

"You don't have to understand it, Equius. You just have to accept it." She eyed him sidelong, narrowly.

Equius considered. It was obvious that Aradia felt strongly on the matter, and that his attempts at wooing her... weren't working very well. On the other hand, he was so red for her that it was ridiculous how he could ever leave her alone.

"...Aradia. Let me confirm: do you have black feelings for me?"

She bit her lip. That question had a complicated answer, but she knew what she had to say, even if things weren't nearly so simple as she would like it to be.

"Yes, I do," she said firmly.

Oh. Wonderful.

"My feelings for you are solely red."

Sometimes he was annoyed at her and her strange decisions that left him out in the cold in favor of Captor. Sometimes he was afraid of her anger, sometimes confused by her. But never could he manage to hate her enough for a black relationship.

"I know," she said with a sigh, and drew her knees up to her chest. She had a feeling she'd never get blackrom in her life, properly. She didn't know how to make someone hate her. Eridan had given her some advice, and she would try to follow it, but what if that didn't work? She was really lost.

...Awkward, and feeling as though he should do something, Equius very lightly rested a hand on her shoulder. Since her robot body had been strongly built, it would easily be fine at such light contact.

It was nice, being able to give a small gesture like that.

She glanced back and looked up at him again, her lips twisted wryly. "It'll...work out somehow."

"Of course it will," he agreed. Lesser trolls than they would have had problems. They would be fine. It might take them some time, but they had no long-term worries, except about dying.
